December Fourteenth

THANK GOODNESS FOR the friendly, helpful sales staff at The Jewelry Box on the town square, who didn’t mind that Jim and I had polar-opposite ideas of what our rings would look like. They just listened patiently as we described what we had in mind, took trays of rings out of the sparkling glass cases, and let us look at them, try them on, and talk about why each one wasn’t quite what we were looking for.

Jim wanted a heavy gold ring, while I liked silver. He decided he wanted to buy me an engagement ring, and I’m sure it would have been sufficiently opulent to please his sister Carla. But I didn’t desire big, flashy stones. I definitely didn’t want something that would remind him of the beautiful, expensive ring he’d bought his first wife, Diana.

The people at The Jewelry Box took our differences and our needs and, no doubt, also our history in stride. They didn’t get in a hurry, become impatient, or try to sway us from what we had in mind.

Wouldn’t it be nice if all people were like that?

Wouldn’t it be nice if my fiancée were like that?

Sigh.

Jim got more and more wound up.

I laid a hand on his sleeve. “Jim, I have an errand. Would you come with me?”

He looked at me in frustration but must have noticed the plea in my eyes. “We’ll be back,” he said as we started toward the door. I put my arm through his when we were on the sidewalk, and we ambled along in step.

“I just needed some fresh air,” I said.

“That’s the errand? Fresh air?”

“Yes. Air for our lungs and to clear our heads. Are we going to argue about our rings, Jim?”

“No. Of course not. I assumed you’d want them to match though.”

“Why?”

“Well. Because I thought that’s how it’s done.”

Because that’s what you and Diana did.

“If I am to wear a ring for the rest of my life, which is my plan, I want to enjoy looking at it every time I set eyes on it. I like silver or white gold. I don’t want diamonds. I prefer sapphires. But if you want a gold ring, that’s fine. That’s great. I don’t want you to look down at your ring finger for the next fifty years or so and wish you’d chosen something different.” By this time, we were a block from the jewelry store, had wandered down the alley, and were behind the public library.

Jim drew me into his arms. “Mel, for the next fifty years or so, when I look at my ring finger the only thought in my head will be that I’m the luckiest man on earth. I don’t care—not much anyway—what kind of metal the ring is. All I care about is that it is one of many reminders that we’ve been given this second chance. That we’ve given each other a second chance.” He tucked hair behind my ears and kissed me. “It’s a little cold here for making out.
